ABOUT THE REGION
The city is one of Sweden’s oldest cities and it is built upon islands, surrounded by water – which makes the sea a beautiful constant in the everyday life for the residents. The city has not once, but twice, been awarded Europe’s finest architectural prize, Europa Nostra. It is the third biggest city in the province.
The county has its own castle, with a history stretching back over 800 years. The present appearance dates from the 16th century when it was rebuilt in the style of a Renaissance palace. Today the city is filled with contrasts – except from interesting historical monuments you can find everything from charming cobblestone streets, beautiful parks and amazing nature to a wide range of restaurants, cafes and pubs.
It is located on the region's coast, in southeast Sweden. It borders Östergötland in the north, Skåne and Blekinge in the south and Halland and Västergötland in the west. From there, you can easily go to Öland, Sweden’s second-largest island.
